How Detoxing Can Jumpstart Weight Loss & Improve Your Health

detoxing for weight loss

Imagine that you live in a small, one room studio apartment. Picture that one room containing your bed, kitchen, dining area, and sitting area.

Now, imagine that you can only remove 20% of your trash each week. So the first week, 80% of the trash remains in your apartment. The second week? 80% of the trash remains once again. This continues week after week.

Picture what your apartment looks like after 1 year or even 5 years of living this way. It’s not fun to imagine, right??

This is what happens in the cells of your body when you don’t eliminate the “waste”, or the toxins, that accumulate there. As can imagine, when your cells fill up with toxins, they can’t do their jobs as easily.

THIS is exactly why we need to detox.

What Does It Mean to Detox?

You can find many definitions of detoxing online, but here’s how I like to think about it:

Detoxing: Making lifestyle changes that help your body remove the toxins stored in cells, body fat, tissues, and organs by reducing your exposure to toxins while also nourishing your body with key nutrients.

Did you catch that? Detoxing is all about making lifestyle changes. It does NOT have to mean (as many people think) that you can’t eat anything for a week…that you deprive your body of all nutrients…that you feel sick and miserable from the uncomfortable side effects.

Instead, it simply means that you reduce your exposure to toxins while also nourishing your body with key nutrients.

Why Detoxing Is Important

Toxins are continually being stored in your body. Where do these toxins come from?

  • Food & Water: Chemicals, pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics are found in our food and in our water.

  • Air: Our air is a big source of industrial pollutants. In fact, more than 2 million KNOWN carcinogens are released into our air every year.

  • Household Products: Environmental chemicals are present in new carpet, mattresses, Scotchguard on new furniture, paint, plastics, and so much more.

  • Personal Care Products: Most of these products…like shampoo, hairspray, deodorant, makeup, toothpaste, and so on…are LOADED with chemicals and toxins.

  • Cleaning ProductsAll of those cleaning products that we use every week in our homes are filled with chemicals.

  • Our Bodies: It may be surprising that our bodies actually release toxins when we are in states of constant stress.

  • Our Minds: Even our negative thoughts and emotions act as toxins.

It’s pretty safe to say that all Americans have been exposed to a plethora of toxins and chemicals throughout our lifetime.

So, What’s the Big Deal About Toxins?

Toxic Chemicals Can Lead to Weight Gain

Having toxins flowing throughout our body could be very harmful to our health. In order to protect us, our bodies store these toxins in a “safe” place, which tends to be in our fat cells. As more toxins get stored in our fat cells, it can lead to weight gain.

In addition, these chemicals can then trigger your body to create NEW fat cells so that your body has plenty of room to store incoming toxins.

Certain toxins and chemicals also disrupt your body’s ability to naturally regulate your weight, making it challenging to lose weight…even if you’re eating healthy. And, they can disrupt hormonal balance, which contributes to weight gain as well.

Potential Health Issues Linked to Toxins

Toxins also create inflammation within the body, leading to a variety of potential health issues. They may contribute to allergies, cancer, birth defects, infertility, digestive issues, and so much more.

They also lead to many common problems that people struggle with on a daily basis:

  • Bad breath

  • Bloating, gas, and constipation

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Feeling sluggish

  • Hormonal imbalances, including PMS symptoms

  • Joint pain

  • Dark circles under the eyes

  • Sleep problems

  • Skin rashes

  • Irritability

The Benefits of Detoxing

By doing a detox, you are allowing your body’s natural detoxification system to do its job more effectively. Cells are able to get rid of the “trash” so that they can perform more effectively, thereby improving your overall health.

And the truth is that your overall health relies upon the health of the individual cells in your body.

Many people experience some amazing benefits by detoxing, such as:

  • An increase in energy

  • Better quality of sleep

  • Wake up feeling refreshed in the morning

  • Jumpstart weight loss that may have been kind of stubborn

  • Clearer skin

  • Clear thinking

  • Less bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhea
