Lose Weight & Feel Great!

 I completely understand!

I spent many years in my 20s trying one diet after another. I counted points, calories, fat grams, you name it, but I could never keep the weight off permanently. I would lose weight, only to gain it (and sometimes an extra pound or two) back later. I wasn’t happy with how I looked, how my clothes fit me, or how I felt about myself.

I became so frustrated with myself because I felt as though I just lacked “willpower”. I felt like there was something wrong with me because I couldn’t figure this weight thing out. Plus, I was so tired of having 2 or 3 sets of pants in my closet…each in a different size. I was too afraid to get rid of one size because who knew when I may need that size again!

But then, finally, I realized that I was overcomplicating my relationship with food and with my weight. By simply focusing on eating real food, by eating mindfully, and by addressing some of my emotional attachments to food, I am finally able to experience a freedom from food that I didn’t know was possible.

It became so much easier to lose weight when I started to focus more on simply being healthy. Most importantly, I now feel healthy, have increased energy, and a renewed sense of purpose in my life…all from healing my relationship with food and with my weight!



Old School Myths

Through my own personal journey, my research, and my work with other people, I have discovered that there are many “old school” myths and ways of thinking which prevent so many of us from ditching those extra pounds for good. Here are just a few of them:

Myth #1



I must count and restrict calories in order to lose weight. 


The Truth: While caloric intake certainly plays a role in weight management, there is definitely more to the story than calories in versus calories out.

Current research now shows that our focus needs to be on eating nutrient dense foods that our bodies naturally thrive on in order to maintain a healthy weight. Additionally, many other factors such as our unique genetic makeup, food sensitivities, and hormones may also help to determine what types of foods we should be eating and avoiding.

In a nutshell, when it comes to weight loss, the actual types of foods we are eating are much more important to take into consideration than how many calories we consume.

Myth #2



I must avoid all foods with a high fat content in order to lose weight.



The Truth: Despite how wide spread this myth has become, it is simply not true. Each and every cell in our bodies requires fat to survive. Additionally, fats help promote satiety, which may prevent overeating. By avoiding all fat, we are not allowing our bodies to function how they are designed to.

The craze of low-fat, processed foods has actually done more harm than good to our current obesity epidemic. When fat is removed from a product, something else must be added in to make it taste good…usually sugar. Unfortunately, sugar tends to be much more harmful to our bodies than fat.

Not all fats are created equal, but as long as you consume a healthy amount of high quality fats, your body will thank you!

Myth #3



I haven’t been able to lose weight because I don’t have any willpower.



The Truth: Believing that maintaining a healthy weight is all about willpower can be extremely frustrating and detrimental to our weight loss efforts because it leaves us feeling helpless.

Many factors need to be addressed instead of focusing on willpower. For example, there may be mental or physical reasons why you crave certain foods. Emotional eating, food addictions, and stress related eating are all real issues for many people. All of these can lead to overeating.

Additionally, if you don’t feel like you have a significant purpose in your life or that you are connected to something bigger than yourself, you may notice a sense of dissatisfaction which also leads to turning to food for comfort.

When you learn how to address and manage these other issues, though, I think you will be surprised by how quickly the problem of “no willpower” simply vanishes!

Myth #4



I must exercise every day for an hour in order to lose weight.



The Truth: While exercise is an important component of an overall healthy lifestyle, certain types of exercise may actually hinder your weight loss efforts. And more exercise is definitely not always better!

For example, chronic cardio can increase your cortisol levels, which triggers your body to store fat, increases oxidative stress, and leads to chronic inflammation.

On the other hand, when done properly, short bursts of intense exercise (High Intensity Interval Training) proves to be much more effective in burning fat.

New research suggests that this type of exercise is far superior to endurance cardio because it is more likely to improve your overall fitness levels, decreases the aging process, and allows you to continue burning fat for up to 36 hours post exercise.
